Why Your Horse’s Rest Is Our Top Priority

Why Your Horse’s Rest Is Our Top Priority

Ella Davidoff |

Whether we’re at home or on the road, one thing we watch closely is how well our horses rest. Over the years, we’ve learned that rest isn’t just a "nice bonus"—it is a foundational pillar of a horse's health, mindset, and performance.

Many people don’t realize that while horses can doze standing up, they must lie down to achieve deep, restorative REM sleep. This stage of rest is essential for muscle recovery, mental processing, and overall well-being.

What happens when a horse doesn't get enough rest? When a horse doesn’t feel safe enough to lie down, it shows. A tired horse may be:

  • More anxious or less focused.

  • Slower to recover after work.

  • Prone to issues with digestion, immunity, and even soundness.

Signs of a well-rested horse: Whether we’re traveling or at home, we look for these quiet indicators of security:

  • A lowered head and relaxed posture.

  • Consistent eating and drinking habits.

  • Most importantly: A willingness to lie down and fully let their guard down.

Travel naturally brings changes in environment and routine. By creating a resting area that feels familiar and safe, we help our horses bridge that gap, allowing them to rebuild muscle and regain confidence.

When a horse can finally say, "I’m okay here," everything else improves. They settle faster, handle new situations with ease, and show up more willing the next day.

Happy Trails,

The Camp Corrals Team

P.S. Seeing a horse lying down comfortably after a long day is the ultimate sign of trust—and it’s a sight we never take for granted.
