s it just me, or do the horses seem a little "extra" lately? Between the green grass popping up and that fresh spring breeze, my herd has definitely caught a case of spring fever. There’s a lot of tail-flagging and "dragon snorting" happening in the pasture this week!
While it’s tempting to just cinch up and head for the hills the moment the weather breaks, I’ve been focusing on a "soft restart." Before we hit the technical trails, we’re spending some quality time just reconnecting.
Getting a horse "trail ready" isn't just about physical fitness; it’s about their headspace. We’re practicing the basics again—standing quietly for mounting, softening, and—most importantly—remembering how to relax in a stationary environment.
One thing I’ve found incredibly helpful is setting up our Camp Corrals right here at home during our training sessions. Instead of just being tied to the trailer or standing in their familiar stall, I’ll let them hang out in their portable corral for an hour after a workout.
It’s been a game-changer for getting them back into a routine. It teaches them that the corral is their "safe space" and "rest zone," no matter where we are. By making the corrals a normal part of our backyard practice now, I know that when we’re miles away at a campsite next month, they’ll see those rails and instantly think, "Okay, this is where I eat and relax." It takes the "spooky" out of the new environment because the routine feels the same.
We’re putting in the miles (and the standing-still time) now so that the first overnight trip of the year is nothing but peaceful.
Take it slow, enjoy the wildflowers, and give your horse an extra carrot for me today.
Happy Trails!
